What The Students Say…

At the end of the 2013 summer students were given the option to provide feedback regarding the workshops. This is what they had to say:

Skip to what they had to say about the Leadership Workshops

Marching Band Workshop…

  • The staff was literally amazing. There could not have been a better group of experienced, kind, and fun teachers to work with
  • I made some great friends and found it such a blessing to be able to connect with people from all across the country!
  • I loved meeting new people and that we were encouraged to switch seats and sit next to someone we did not know.
  • It was one of the most amazing experiences that I have ever had, and one that I will certainly remember forever!
  • I really liked how in addition to playing that we learned how to clean our marching techniques; I am going to pass it all on to my band. I also learned you don’t need to be the drum major to be a role model for other members of the band; I can’t wait to try and be that person for someone else this year!
  • When I arrived to the field for the first session, I was not entirely looking forward to it. However, as the camp drew to a close I found myself wishing for more time. I feel more prepared and capable now than I could have possibly been without the workshop.
  • My snare playing technique improved over the 4 days but what is best are the techniques I learned which will help me continue to improve on my own and help me help other kids in my band improve.
  • The program was fantastic. I learned more than I ever thought I would. The way our days were scheduled, part inside part out, was perfect. This was the best experience of my life and I plan on cming back next year as a vet for my senior year.
  • The staff was amazing!!!!! The instructional staff was very informative, understanding, funny, and helpful. It was really great having the CLIP staff around all the time; they were always there to help us whether it was walking across campus or needing a band-aid or knowing what was coming next. They were a lot of fun as dorm advisers and I liked knowing that if I had a problem at night I just had to knock on the door down the hall.
  • My first time at DMA was the best week I’ve had in a long time!
  • I was really intimidated by drum major things like saluting and calling commands and reading a score; DMA helped me learn all of that and I realize now how every drum major before me seemed to magically be awesome – Drum Major Academy is like a secret weapon of awesomeness!
  • I am so glad my band director made me go to both workshops – The Vivace camps changed my life!!!!
  • So. Much. Fun.
  • I take away so much from this camp I couldn’t wait to come back my second year and I’m so glad I did. I am sorry I can’t be coming back for year 3! In the past 2 years these camps have helped define my high school experience!
  • This week was perfect – I’m definitely going to be back. 🙂
  • I am really shy but I busted out of my bubble and made so many new friends, and I’m so glad that I did! I learned how other people learn and other techniques that other schools use, as well as some new color guard tricks! I’m so excited to share my new ideas and lessons from the workshop!
  • We have a small band without any staff other than my band director. With what I’ve learned I think I can do more than just conduct; I can really help her help make the band better.
  • I had such an AMAZING time this week at camp. I met a lot of wonderful people, learned A TON of new skills, and improved myself as a guard member in general. Thank you, Vivace for a nice four days!
  • I had an amazing time working with Thom, Darren, and Michael. They were amazing people and very helpful. You can tell they’re very passionate about what they do and it’s so amazing that they share their love with students.
  • Todd was AMAZING and his staff was so amazing!!!! I loved the camp and I would come back if I wasn’t a senior this year!!!
  • The staff was absolutely amazing, I don’t know how all those fantastic people come together in one camp, but their expertise in what they do made all of the difference in what I got out of the camp.
  • Not only did I take skills in marching, and leadership, but I left this workshop with increased confidence in myself. I wasn’t so sure about how I would do this fall, but now I know I can do my job and do it well. Also, I feel many life lessons were taught and I walked away with plenty more under my belt and I intend to utilize them not only in marching band but in other aspects of my life as well.
  • I cannot even begin to explain how much I took away from the workshop. I really honestly learned so much, not just within the realms of conducting and teaching and etc., but life in general: leadership skills, communication skills, etc. I simply can’t thank the program enough for much it’s changed me for the better.
  • This was the best experience of my life. I had a blast. The camaraderie was incredible and I made many friends. The energy everyone had was incredible and I was taught so many wonderful things. I laughed and cried and learned SO MUCH. I can’t wait for next year!!!
  • I am just very excited to take what I learned from this workshop back to my band. I feel like just over these four days alone, I’ve matured in a way. I can’t wait to have some talks with people in my band about things we might want to do differently, and now having the tools to do that will make this year and great one.
  • I am so happy that I came and almost shocked at the amount I was able to learn, about being a drum major and myself, over only 4 days. Thank you!
  • In less than 4 days all my rudiments were much cleaner and I felt much more confident. I really liked the new techniques we learned for practice.
  • DMA has helped me improve my leadership skills greatly as well as my conducting. Before going to this camp, I was very timid while calling commands and addressing my band, but now I have a lot more confidence and intensity. I also made a lot of friends from all over who are just trying to do the same job that I am. I will never forget my DMA experience! 🙂
  • Todd was so patient and the whole colorguard staff was fantastic at grasping our strengths and playing them to our advantage.
  • I am a better drummer because of this camp. Honestly I’ve always been afraid of being a “band geek” but Thom helped me see that it’s also not cool to be fully committed to something. I am going to take that attitude back to our band.
  • After being drum major this past marching band season, I thought I had a pretty good understanding of how to run the band this next year. After attending DMA, I feel as if I have an entirely new perspective on how to make the season as great as possible. With so much information packed into a few days, I have new tool kit and I hope I’ll be able to choose what will help my band the best throughout the season.
  • The workshop was amazing. I know I’m going to use most of the things I learned and the lessons will be invaluable.
  • I definitely felt more prepared and more aware of the things my past drum majors had to do to look so polished. I also feel a lot more responsible and inspired to take on the leading challenge.
  • The workshop was very good! I thought that being placed into squads with people we didn’t know at all was a GREAT idea. It helped me learn how to work with others and to make friends while at DMA.
  • The program is just excellent. Coming to the DMA was a life changing experience.
  • I’m not going to lie, when I first got there I thought that I was not going to enjoy myself, but I found by the end of the week, I got a little sad thinking that I would never see these awesome people again. I felt liked specific attention was focused on me, which is a truly tough thing to accomplish when there were so many others. Thank you for making this a memorable experience!
  • I never thought I’d learn as much as I did at this color guard camp considering we were there for only a few days, but I certainly was wrong! I learned so many new tosses, techniques, and was amazed at the outcome of the final show. I also learned how to make my own color guard routine and how to be a leader which was an amazing plus to the workshop. Everything was planned out very well and because of that we were able to get a lot of things done.
  • I learned many new elements to take back to my guard. The instructors were incredible, not only in their skill, but in their patience.
  • Over the course of 4 days, DMA changed my outlook on band, leadership, and my own life. The workshop forced me to look inside myself and see the things I should change in order to become the best leader I can be. The skills I learned are invaluable and I will take them along with my new attitude to my school’s band season this year.
  • I can’t believe I got to work with some of these staff members! Every year I go to the college band show in Allentown with my band and I was really intimidated to be learning from College Professors but they were funny and friendly and made it really easy to learn and improve. I want to keep playing in college now!!
  • I learned a lot. It’s incredible how much goes into being a drum major-things that I didn’t even think about-and having this shared experience also brought me closer to my school’s past drum majors. I feel like I’ve also become more outgoing and a better leader.
  • This program was so amazing and everyone was so funny, engaging, and inspirational!!
  • I appreciated the leadership sessions along with the rehearsal and technique learning; they gave me a better understanding of the responsibilities of leading my section.
  • I am so grateful that I was able to refine my conducting skills to the point that my band mates will be able to easily understand my conducting and conducting as a whole has become comfortable for me!
  • All the staff was great. They made everything so fun, yet serious and learning-based at the same time. They came to the group with enthusiasm and a positive look on everything. That was the tone for the few short days we were together and it made things all the better. I wish I could have bottled up the personalities of all the staff members for myself!
  • The staff is a great group of people. They have great senses of humor and are truly passionate about what they do. It never fails to amaze me how dedicated these people are when I think about how much and how far and how often they travel across the country teaching students the program over and over again, year after year. The commitment to consistently continuing the program is really astounding. It clearly takes an extreme amount of devotion.
  • The workshop was outstanding. They didn’t just want you to be an outstanding drum major, but to be an outstanding person. The staff was so dedicated and they pushed us to new limits. I walked away from DMA with a new confidence on who I am and who I want to become.
  • It was great to meet so many people who play better than I do. I learned that I still have so much to learn and this camp helped me learn more and be motivated to keep playing.
  • The program was awesome! I came to camp ready to learn but I never would have guessed that I would learn as much as I did. I had such a great time and though it was an exhausting four days, it was well worth it!
  • Amazing!

Band Leadership Training Workshop and Seminars…

  • It was an emotional and jam packed experience! I learned so much and had such a wonderful time. I really appreciate everything the staff taught me!
  • Tim always had some great things to say and is a very engaging speaker. I think that the second time around I definitely got more out of the experience.
  • This program was truly an eye-opening experience. Thank you for this amazing experience. It has changed me in so many ways and I want to thank you. This workshop put a light on various things I have never even considered, and it will now impact my life and the lives around me.
  • It was easily one of the best experiences of my life. I learned so much about people, leadership, and even myself. The biggest thing I learned is that leadership is about giving to others. Through the workshop, I realized that a leader’s true job is to serve, and that caring about others is key to being a successful leader, role model, and person.
  • It was my third time attending this camp and I have learned and heard different things each time! The staff is all absolutely incredible and Heidi has truly changed my outlook on life and how your attitude changes everything- never be a complainer!
  • I realized that being a leader isn’t just about the title but it’s also about taking the first step to get something done without needing to be told and being a good example. It was a great refresher on the skills of being a leader that I had learned from last year’s workshop!
  • This program gave me a great head start on becoming a leader of my drumline in 2014. Thank you so much.
  • I learned about the importance that any individual can have in the shaping of the group as a whole. I took away that by actively trying to use leadership techniques in everyday life, I can improve myself in more ways than just as a musician!
  • The leadership in my band learned that how well we do is ultimately up to us and how we set the tone to be from the beginning. We learned how to teach better, using different types of communication. The most important thing we learned was that there are no boundaries. It is up to leadership to figure out ways to always be improving.
  • I really enjoyed this workshop. It taught me to be more open. It also taught me that leadership isn’t about how loud you can yell, it’s about connecting with people and meeting them halfway to help them reach their potential.
  • I had been to the program before, but this time I actually was in a leadership position. I learned about the huge importance of giving, and forgiving. I feel that now, I have a huge understanding of what I need to do better, and what skills I’m good at. It was a great day, and I would go back in a heartbeat.
  • The workshop made me realize what I COULD do as a leader, and how to proper establish myself as one.
  • I didn’t realize how much my actions would affect the people around me until this workshop. Every time I (or someone else) was late on or missed something, he called us out on it and reminded us that the better we are the better the people under us can be and the worse we are the worse the people under us will be. It was a very interesting and exciting workshop, and I’m looking forward to it again next year.
  • Overall, the program was incredible and quite enlightening. Many of the things Dr. Tim talked about almost seemed obvious, but they’re not things many people think about, so having them all brought forward to think about was awesome.
  • I learned how to communicate with others using more than words. I learned that being a leader means not focusing on “I” but focusing on “we”.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the workshop, and I now know what my own personal strengths and weaknesses are. My communication skills have improved tremendously, and I wish I could attend a workshop like this every weekend.
  • I learned how to pay closer attention to the younger people and their needs. Also that the true definition of a leader is what you do when no one is watching. I loved the workshop and am looking forward to leading my section. Thank you!
  • This workshop not only taught me how to be a better leader, but also a better person and friend. I gain a little bit every time I see Dr. Tim, and I’m sad that I won’t be able to attend this workshop again.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed every single moment of BLT! I enjoyed all of the challenges that Heidi gave us during the outside sessions. Thank you all so much for this wonderful experience.
  • The training was an eye opener. It was captivating and I learned a lot. I hope I can take some of the topics and apply it to my team.
  • This has been such a rewarding and worthwhile experience! It has been two of the best spent days of my life. I feel like I could learn something new from each of them every day. I’m going to be a senior this year, but if I could go back I would definitely have attended this workshop every year of high school! I loved it so much! Thanks for the amazing opportunity!
  • This program is absolutely amazing! It’s a feeling that I have never felt in my life. I took away more than I ever could have imagined. It was a great day and a half. Dr. Tim is hilarious and thoughtful!
  • I really liked it! I thought it was going to be lectures and reading books on how to be a better leader, I wasn’t looking forward to it. It was waaaay different. We were involved the whole time and we were kept entertained.
  • I would definitely go back next year if I wasn’t graduating.
  • This is my third year at the camp and honestly everything started to make sense to me this year. It was truly emotional for me to find out how to not only be a leader but be a good person. I could go on and on about what I learned but I am for sure a better person because of this camp.
  • I was completely surprised at how much of an impact this workshop had on me. All in all, it was an incredible, life changing experience. Thank you!
  • I took away so many wonderful things that I want to share with my band! The entire time I was at the retreat I was blown away with how much I was learning and how much it is going to help my band that I came and for my own sake in life. The conference not only is going to help me be a better leader for my band, but it’s going to make me a better person.
  • After attending this workshop two years in a row, I truly got a different perspective of leadership this last time. This year really hit me hard about standards within my band and how it really takes me and my student leaders to make a difference.
  • I thought the whole experience was just amazing. Like, all the activities we had to do with complete strangers, I thought it would just be awkward, but it wasn’t because everyone was so into it! That was really cool. There’s so much more I can think of to type, but I’ll just say it was an enlightening experience and I’m going to take so much from it to help me be a great leader in band this year!
  • Going into this leadership role was kind of scary, but after I attended the workshop I felt as if I could accomplish anything.
  • This program made me realize how important is to be the best that you could be as a leader because the band can only be as good as the person that leads them! I also learned that it is important to have a positive relationship with the band and those I lead and to make sure to connect to everyone so they all feel welcome and are comfortable so that they can also reach their full potential.
  • I learned a lot about leadership styles and found that the material from years past sunk in finally. I also met several new people in different bands around the state that I plan to keep in touch with.
  • It was a very good experience. I learned what it takes to have leadership and what it means to have leadership. I also love the fact that you get to meet new people from different places in the US.
  • The biggest thing I took away was simply that being a leader isn’t about being better than anyone else, it’s about giving what I have to the members of the band. I realized that leadership skills are applicable to all things, not just band. Thank you for all you did to make the program a success. I wish I could come back next year!
  • This workshop was amazing. It really opened my eyes that being a leader isn’t just about helping people, it’s about making an impact on a person’s life and really being a friend they can go to instead of just a person who is in charge of a section that they have to listen to.
  • I learned so much from this workshop. Dr. Tim was such a great speaker and he really made me excited for the responsibilities that I’m about to take on. I learned about the different kinds of leadership, and how to be a good leader that gets things done well, but efficiently. I also learned how to deal with and help people that might try to make my job as section leader harder. Overall, after going to this workshop, I feel so prepared and excited for this upcoming season.
  • I gained self-confidence; I learned about myself and how to work with others successfully; I am in the process of accepting my own shortcomings and maturing so I can contribute more to my band program and just be a better human being.
  • I really think I took more notes in 2 days than I have in 3 years of high school; and I really enjoyed doing it! I needed to write everything down because my brain doesn’t have enough room for everything Tim and Heidi were teaching us! I wish I could go back!
  • I didn’t really want give up 4 hours of my summer but now I wish I lived near one of the 2 day workshops! I learned so much in such a small amount of time – my whole perspective has changed, not just about band but about almost everything I do!
  • THANK YOU!
